Academic staff and university students from the University of Plymouth Faculty of Science and Technology will be present at the event over the two days. Base Camp Visit Peter Smithers at Base Camp and join in with one or more of these activites.............. Exploring the microcosm This will provide the public with a chance to get up close and personal with some of the smaller animals that live around us. A series of microscopes will enable the viewers to look at mites, fleas, head lice spiders and other tiny creatures that ordinarily go unnoticed. A number of scanning electron micrographs will also be on show .We hope to make viewers aware of the amazing detail that can be seen under the microscope and students will be on hand to explain some of the fascinating stories associated with our tiny neighbours. Why eat insects? A talk that introduces insects as part of human diets, explores what is eaten where in the world and why.This will be followed by a buffet of insect snacks, everyone is invited to try some. Big Bug Bounty Hunt (for younger visitors) A sheet of clues will be available which will guide children to students in hiding around the stadium. Each student will have a large bug to show the hunters. The student will talk about the bug they have and stamp the hunters sheet. I don't try to conquer mountains or cross continents, although there nothing wrong with that. For me the challenge is to get to know the environment and how it can be of use to us. Hopefully a hot summer and shows like Explore the Outdoors will encourage more people to enjoy nature.
